The American Optometric Association estimates that 125 million computer users suffer from some form of CVS. Every year vision disorders account for more than $8 billion in lost productivity and can decrease employee performance by as much as 20 percent according to research published by the Vision Council of America. If you are having problems with headaches, dry eye, and/or eyestrain, and especially if they relate to long periods of time with a computer or TV screen, I strongly recommend you work with your eye doctor to treat the problem before it gets worse. I have been struggling with severe dry eye for almost a year now: 5 months of that has been using Restasis and steroid eye drops (Alrex) at the direction of my doctor. I knew a lot of it had to do with my work because I felt worse on the weekdays and my workplace is filled with fluorescent overhead lighting. After reading up on Gunnars, I found a local reseller and made an appointment to come in.
I fully expected to try them on, nothing would happen, and I’d thank them for their time. Instead, I could immediately tell a difference. I bought a pair and I keep them with me. I’ve been extremely pleased with what they’ve done for me: my eyes feel more relaxed when I’m using a computer (or flat-panel TV, or getting up-close with a backlit screen like my PSP). The yellow tint is very faint, and it’s a price I’m willing to pay because the eye irritation had gotten pretty bad: I have to use a computer at least 40-50 hours a week and often more.
Do these glasses make you faster at gaming? I kind of doubt it. I can’t see how they could improve response time except that after long periods in front of the computer you’ll be less likely to struggle to focus.
Do Gunnars make you more productive at work? I’m not seeing that either–but I am less stressed after a long stint.
My Gunnars also do not appear to improve activities like driving at night (and you definitely want stronger eye protection when you’re outdoors in the daytime). You don’t want to wear them all the time: like reading glasses, you should just put these on as needed.
Do they otherwise help you to see better? Not really; I get the impression that someone without an eye problem is not likely to feel the difference as much…Gunnars seem to be more about feeling better than seeing better. Because of my own experiences, I have to suggest that anyone who has to work in front of a computer for long periods of time consider purchasing a pair as a future investment: with luck it will slow down the long-term effects that are now starting to hit me after decades of this. For people working in graphics/design where correct color balance is important, there are clear, untinted versions of Gunnars: I suggest you try them on before buying.
My eye doctor says that at the very least you want a lens that is anti-glare and anti-reflective. Where Gunnars take it a step further is the coatings and tint: there’s something about this lens that simply reduces harshness and makes your eyes more comfortable.
I use the computer for most of the day, and have suffered from dry and irritated eyes.
I’ve bought the Gunnar Optiks SheaDog (Onyx) a couple months ago.
When putting on the glasses for the first time, I hoped to feel a noticeable improvement in contrast and the slight magnification. But in practice, I don’t feel that the glasses improve my vision noticeably.
However, after using them for several weeks, I can say that they do reduce eyestrain. I used to reach the end of the day with dry, red and burning eyes. Today by 3am my eyes are tired, but not red or burning, and I don’t feel the need to stop and rub them.
Negative points:
The yellow tint was really annoying for about a week, but you get used to it eventually.
Optics-wise, the lenses aren’t perfect. There is a noticeable reflection of light from the top and bottom parts of the lens, and they reflect the user’s eyes as well (you see the world through a bright reflection of your own eyes). Bothersome when you pay attention to it, but can be ignored for most of the time.
By the way, while driving with the glasses, when you look at street lamps, you can clearly see the glare reduction. The light refraction also creates irritating blue dots. So there are clearly some advanced optics involved; these are’t just yellow pieces of plastic.
Bottom line: Not a magic solution, and it doesn’t solve 100% of eyestrain issues. The same lens technologies used to reduce harmful light can cause other irritations (tint, reflection of own eyes). Nevertheless, I DO choose to put these on each morning (and until each night) for the reduce in eyestrain.
I absolutly love these glasses not only do they take away my eye strain but they let me relax and sit back while playing because of the low magnification they have in the lens. Also the frame of the glasses allow me to wear my tritons or my bluetooth headset while playing my ps3 and cause me no problems at all.
I bought them two days ago and I can tell the difference already, they don’t weight anything.. you can barely know they there but you definitely going to notice the yellow tint, takes a little time to get used to but they actually reduce eyestrain, have a little zoom effect that helps you focus the screen too. The first thing I noticed was the super slim frame, they look a little fragile and are very flexible too, overall great pair of glasses!
I bought these glasses in hopes of easing the strains from staring at a computer screen all day. They have helped in that regard. The only reason these don’t get 5 stars from me is the appearance of the glasses. People have commented on the yellow tinting, and it looks a bit strange. If there was a way they could ease the tinting so that they look like normal glasses I’d gladly give them 5 stars.
